We restore original elements of the stations
During the Centenary, we are working to restore decorative and architectural elements that have been lost over time.
Restoration of the pinnacles of Liceu station
The original 1925 pinnacles of the Liceu station will be reinstalled to mark the Metro’s Centenary. These architectural elements will once again adorn the two entrances located on La Rambla, at the Liceu, restoring the original appearance the station entrances had at the time of their inauguration.
From July 21 to 27, two of the four entrances on La Rambla at Liceu station have been temporarily closed to repair the rusted front panel, paint the corroded metal side structure, and replace the inner side glass.
This initiative coincides with the station’s 100th anniversary, as Liceu station was opened to the public on July 5, 1925. It also marked the first extension of the pioneering section of the Gran Metro de Barcelona, which we now know as Line 3.
Restoration of "the rotunda of transport" at plaça Catalunya
During the months of May and June, the mural known as the "rotunda of tansport" in the metro and FGC interchange beneath Plaça Catalunya was restored as part of the Barcelona Metro Centenary.
This collection of six panels was restored thanks to an initiative led by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona and the Archaeology Service of Barcelona – Barcelona Institute of Culture (ICUB). The project went through three phases, including initial conservation work on the space, the restoration, cleaning, and adaptation of the entire mural ensemble, and a future maintenance plan.
The project also involved the Escola Massana (EM), from which the original authors of the mural emerged in 1969, and students from the Higher School of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage of Catalonia (ESCRBCC), who carried out the hands-on restoration work.
Additional work was also done around the mural, including polishing the floor and walls, improving the lighting, and cleaning the central chandelier that presides over the space.
