Acte institucional de presentació dels 100 Anys del Metro de Barcelona
The main milestone in the calendar of centenary celebrations.
The Paranimf of the Industrial School hosted the main event of the Centenary
More than 350 people took part in the official celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Barcelona Metro, led by the president of the Generalitat.
On June 30, 2025, the Metro’s Centenary reached one of its main milestones: the institutional event marking the first 100 years of Barcelona’s underground. Held at the Paranimf of the Industrial School, the event gathered authorities, representatives from institutions, members of TMB, and other guests.
A live dance and music performance opened the ceremony, "transporting" the audience back to 1924—the year the Metro was inaugurated. Next came a video which, thanks to modern technology and artificial intelligence, brought to life the Metro, the people, and the city of a century ago by animating historical images.
The video was followed by the presentation of the book One Hundred Years of the Barcelona Metro, which compiles these and other images tracing the history of the metropolitan railway up to the present day.
The event was hosted by presenter Elisabet Carnicé, who gave the floor to various officials.
The closing remarks came from the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, who noted that “the metro unites and connects people, municipalities, businesses, cultural heritage, and talent.” He also used the occasion to announce future service goals.
The speeches by the authorities
The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, celebrated the Metro’s centenary by thanking the more than 4,000 people who work in the system and make mobility in the city possible. Collboni recalled that “with the first metro journey on December 30, 1924, the identity of a city began to change—one that has evolved alongside the metro.” He also addressed major future challenges facing the network.
After the mayor’s speech, a second video spotlighted GenTMB—the Metro’s staff. It showcased the faces of workers as a collective tribute to the people who make this shared project possible.
The people behind the Metro were the focus of the speech by TMB president Laia Bonet, who thanked all the employees who, over time, have been part of a journey that began a century ago. She expressed gratitude for their efforts “keeping a network running that transports 1.6 million people daily—almost as many as the city’s population—and making Barcelona proud to have a metro system among the best in Europe.”
