125 years climbing towards Tibidabo

The historic Tibidabo tram celebrates 125 years of history as one of Barcelona’s most unique means of transport. Inaugurated in 1901, it remains a landmark in the city’s mobility heritage and in the history of public transport.

The Tramvia Blau is one of Barcelona’s most iconic historic transport services. Put into service in 1901, it is the sole survivor of the city’s former tram network and connects l'avinguda del Tibidabo with the lower station of the Tibidabo Funicular along a route of 1,276 metres. Along the journey, passengers can enjoy the area's modernist architecture and outstanding views of the city.

It is currently temporarily out of service due to infrastructure modernisation works. While the works are underway, the route can be covered using bus line 196.

Over more than a century of history, the Tramvia Blau has undergone several extensions, refurbishments and technical upgrades that have ensured its continuity. After coming close to disappearing in the 1970s, public support helped preserve it, and since 1981 it has been operated by Transports de Barcelona.

Beyond its value as a means of transport, the Tramvia Blau is a significant part of the city’s historical heritage and a symbol of the connection between Barcelona and the Tibidabo.
