Transversal Metro Centenary

In 2026, the centenary of the Transversal Metro is commemorated, inaugurated on 10 June 1926 between Bordeta and Catalunya, the origin of today’s Line 1 (L1). Initially conceived as a major underground railway axis to connect Barcelona’s main train lines, the Transversal eventually became a fundamental element of urban mobility and one of the city’s main drivers of transformation.
Throughout the 20th century, the line expanded and consolidated itself as the main axis of the metropolitan network, connecting neighborhoods, people, and new urban centers. Its historic stations and the iconic Series 100 trains form part of the collective memory of several generations of passengers.
In 1959, the first section of what was then called Line II was inaugurated, between La Sagrera and Vilapicina, the embryo of today’s Line 5 and the beginning of a new expansion of the metro towards the north of the city.
The definitive consolidation of the network would arrive on 28 June 1961 with the merger of the Gran Metro and the Transversal Metro, which gave rise to the Ferrocarril Metropolitano de Barcelona (FMB), predecessor of today’s TMB metro network.
